Chateau La Grave, Cru Bourgeois, Medoc, Bordeaux, 2018
Château La Grave belonged to the Cadis family, an old Medocan family. Madame Cadis inherited some vines, then planted new plots with her husband and children. Three generations lived on the property when it was bought in 2014, but the family still remain.
Château La Grave is a beautiful 19 hectare estate located in the north of the Médoc, in Blaignan. They have an excellent clay-limestone soil with a limestone subsoil, the sedimentation of which dates back to the Quaternary era. It is an ideal terroir for cultivating the Merlot grape. 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and half a hectare of Petit Verdot is planted. This blend, with a high proportion of Merlot, makes Chateau La Grave an atypical wine in the Médoc, very round with silky tannins and lots of fruit aromas.
Post-sale, all the buildings were restored between 2015 and 2017. The cellars have been completely revisited: the floors, the coating of the tanks, the water treatment, the thermoregulation of the tanks; the cellar equipment has been changed. The Cadis family sold their wine in bulk to Bordeaux wine merchants. Today, the wines of Château La Grave are bottled at the Château, and are becoming a 'known' chateau perhaps for the first time. One to watch.
