Chateau Caronne Ste Gemme, Cru Bourgeois, Haut Medoc, Bordeaux, 2018
Located in the Haut-Medoc appellation of Bordeaux, Chateau Carrone Ste. Gemme is managed by the grandson and nephew of Emile Borie who owned the estate in the 1900s. The chateau has 50 hectares under vine, situated on gravel mounds that lie on a subsoil of iron-rich sandstone to the east and clay to the west.
The capacity of such a soil within the temperate and oceanic climate of the Haut-Medoc region helps the vignerons work on continuous improvement of the quality of the wines. However, this is no ordinary Haut-Medoc. Caronne St-Gemme is but 500 yards from the St Julian appellation, and directly adjacent to Chateau Lascombes and Chateau Gruaud Larose. Simply, it's some of the best value wine in Bordeaux.
The vineyard of Caronne Ste. Gemme is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. The 40-hectare vineyard produces a wine that is aged in 30% new, French oak barrels for 12 months.
